AGRA: A fast-track court in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh on Saturday awarded life imprisonment to two men for 2022 gangrape of a woman and robbery. The trial of a third accused, a juvenile, continues separately. The survivor, who lived in Delhi with her husband, was travelling to her in-laws’ house in UP when she was assaulted, reported.
In her statement, the woman told cops she had reached Aligarh at night on April 14 and took an auto from bus stand for her village. The auto driver picked up two other men, who he said were his friends, and took wrong route to her village. When she protested, the driver said he was going to drop one of his friends in a nearby village. While she was talking to her husband on the phone, the accused stopped the auto, tried to strangle her, and snatched her jewellery and purse containing Rs 20,000. The two men raped her in the moving auto before the driver stopped to rape her, with her husband on the call all through. They fled after dumping her near a canal. Labourers at a nearby brick kiln heard her screams for help and called the police. The court has also fined the duo Rs 1 lakh each.
Additional district govt counsel (Aligarh), Krishna Murari Johri, said, “The stolen items found with the convicts, DNA report, forensic lab findings, the testimony of witnesses, the statement of the victim in court and the fact that the husband of the victim was on call at the time of the incident played a crucial role in establishing the case against the three.”
