JAMMU: Two Pakistani terrorists armed with AK-47 rifles, an American M4 carbine and a pistol were killed in a gunfight with security forces while attempting to cross the LoC near Loam of Rajouri district in J&K, officials said Monday.
The operation comes amid heightened security in the Union territory, where assembly elections are set to take place from Sept 18 to Oct 1.The Jammu region has been grappling with a surge in terrorist attacks, resulting in 15 security force casualties since May 4.
White Knight Corps reported that soldiers, along with J&K police, launched a manhunt on the night of Sept 8-9 after receiving intelligence about potential terrorist infiltrations from Pakistan.
“Ground-based and aerial surveillance assets were employed to monitor the area. Patrols were conducted with increased frequency and troops deployed at certain locations,” military spokesperson Col Suneel Bartwal said.
Suspicious movements were detected around 7.30pm Sunday, which led to a prolonged gunfight through the night. “UAVs, night-vision cameras, and other surveillance equipment were used to keep track of the terrorists. Two of them were neutralised,” Col Bartwal said.
A follow-up mop-up uncovered a “cache of war-like stores”, including two AK-47 rifles, an M4 carbine with a scope, a pistol, and ammunition.
