BAREILLY: Four students — aged between six and 11 — were among five killed after a school bus collided head on with a school van on a rural road near Miau of UP‘s Budaun district on Monday .
Thirteen children also suffered injuries and were admitted to Budaun medical college. “The condition of three children (who were travelling in the van) is critical.About 20-25 students were on the bus, and some of them received minor injuries while others are still in trauma,” said a doctor. Police said the school van’s front cabin was completely damaged and driver Omendra Kumar (25) and a student, Khushi Kumari (6), died on the spot. Sixteen children were rushed to hospital where doctors declared Harshit Kumar (6), Kaushalya (10) and Pradeep (11) ‘dead on arrival’. The students in the van were from a private junior high school while those on the bus were from a private senior secondary school.
Budaun DM Manoj Kumar, who visited the hospital along with SSP OP Singh, said, “A magisterial inquiry has been ordered in the matter, and the chief medical officer (CMO) has been directed to ensure best possible treatment to the injured children.” SSP OP Singh said, “We are investigating the cause behind the accident. An FIR was registered at Usawan police station against the bus driver under IPC sections 279 (rash driving) and 304-A (causing death by negligence). The accused has been arrested.”
“Prima facie, both the school vehicles — run by private operators — were speeding. Most of these vans operating in schools in the district’s rural areas are old and unsafe,” said the SSP. This is the third such accident involving school vehicles in Bareilly division in a week. Nine children were injured in a school van accident on NH-24 in Katra area of Shahjahanpur on October 26. Also, four schoolchildren were injured in a similar incident in Bareilly’s Deorania on October 27.
