NEW DELHI: As the Indian Premier League 2024 heads towards its climactic final on Sunday, former cricketers and cricket experts Matthew Hayden and Kevin Pietersen have backed Kolkata Knight Riders to triumph over Sunrisers Hyderabad, citing KKR‘s superior spin attack and better head-to-head record this season.
KKR, who have defeated SRH in their league stage encounters, come into the final with confidence and momentum, according to former Australia opener Hayden.Speaking on Star Sports Cricket Live, he expressed strong belief in KKR’s prospects.
“I’m very confident that KKR are going to win here. Having a few days off, having the ability to watch this match, and understanding what the strengths and weaknesses of Sunrisers Hyderabad are will be helpful,” Hayden stated.Hayden highlighted the impact of KKR’s spin duo, Sunil Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy, who he believes will exploit the conditions at Chepauk effectively. “I also just feel that the quality spin of Narine and Chakaravarthy on the red clay is going to make a difference.”
Reflecting on the rigorous nature of the IPL, Hayden emphasized the importance of mental resilience and team commitment in winning such a demanding tournament. “It’s about just getting it right, really as simple as that. Only the strong-hearted get a chance to lift that trophy at the end.”
Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen also believes KKR have the upper hand heading into the final. He pointed out SRH’s lackluster performance in their recent match against Rajasthan Royals, which could affect their confidence.

“I didn’t like the way the Sunrisers threw in the towel the other evening in Ahmedabad, and I think it’s going to put them on the back foot for the start on Sunday,” Pietersen noted.
Pietersen praised KKR’s recent performances, particularly their convincing win in Qualifier 1, and stressed the importance of maintaining a positive mindset. “KKR have an advantage, given the way they’ve played, their convincing win in qualifier one, and their preparation over the last three or four days.”
Both experts agreed that the toss will be a crucial factor in the final, especially considering the possibility of dew. However, they emphasized KKR’s overall confidence and preparation as key factors that give them an edge over SRH.
“The toss is 50-50. It’s all about the mindset and confidence coming into this fixture,” Pietersen said. “KKR have a squad full of match-winners, and their key players, especially the spinners, have been in excellent form.”
With KKR poised and prepared, and SRH needing to overcome their recent setbacks, the final promises to be a thrilling contest. The stage is set for a battle of skills and strategies as both teams vie for the coveted IPL 2024 title at Chepauk on Sunday.
