MAND MAHINWAL (SULTANPUR LODHI): The parental house of Kulwinder Kaur – who joined the CISF in 2008-09 and got married in 2015 in Jammu – is close to the Dhussi bundh of Satluj river.
Her parents, grandparents and her brother’s family who live in this simple house are middle-level farmers. Kaur’s brother Sher Singh is a leader of Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee but support has been pouring in from several other farm groups also and they have rallied behind the CISF constable and her family.
Sher Singh said that “there was not much discussion with her” on the farm issues while the entire family has been backing the farm protests.
Kaur allegedly slapped newly-elected BJP MP from Mandi Kangana Ranaut at Chandigarh airport.
Her mother Veer Kaur said, “I was part of the farm movement and sat at the Delhi border during the farm movement. Am I worth a penny as Kangana had remarked? Kangana might have said something to her first, otherwise she has been very well behaved throughout. I first need to know the facts of the case from a video.” Her father has not been keeping well for close to a year and her mother said that they had not informed him about the incident. She said that some of her close relatives of the family served the Army and some were still serving.
“Two elder brothers of my husband were also in the Army and served during the 1965 War,” she said.
Meanwhile, throughout the day, farm and Sikh groups kept on visiting the parental house of the CISF constable to express solidarity with her and the family. All the groups and activists who have been coming to visit the family have been presenting siropas (robe of honour) to her entire family, including her grandparents.
The family had to make sitting arrangements outside the house also. Sher Singh has demanded that if Kulwinder slapped Kangana, video footage of the entire incident should also be put out in the public domain so that people could know the reality of what actually happened and how the argument was triggered. “We have not been able to speak to her but then we could speak to her husband and have brought her two kids here,” Singh said, adding that they were coming to know everything from media or social media.
