HDFC Bank is bringing a big change to its UPI transaction alerts sent by SMS. Starting June 25, the bank will stop sending SMS alerts for small transactions to its customers. This means that HDFC Bank customers won’t receive text notifications for sending money under Rs 100 or receiving less than Rs 500 via UPI. For transactions under Rs 500, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is promoting UPI Lite.
This change streamlines communication and reduces redundancy, as most UPI apps already send their notifications. However, users don’t need to worry as they’ll still get email alerts for all transactions. Users who already have their email IDs linked with their HDFC Bank account already get UPI transaction alerts on their mail. However, new users can register for them while old users can also change their registered email IDs for these alerts.

How to update for email to receive all the UPI transaction alerts

Step 1: Visit www.hdfc.com
Step 2: Click on the “Insta Service” option
Step 3: Scroll through the menu to find the “Update Email ID” option.
Step 4: Click on “Let’s Begin”
Step 5: Enter your registered mobile number
Step 6: Verify using DOB, PAN or Customer ID
Step 7: Click on “Get OTP”
Step 8: Enter the OTP and follow the instructions
Users who register for this service will get notified about all their UPI transactions through email notifications. These alerts will also include low-value transactions for which users will stop getting SMS notifications starting next week.

Why HDFC Bank is making this change

HDFC Bank cited customer feedback and cost savings for stopping SMS alerts for smaller transactions. This aligns with banking norms and avoids duplicating notifications from UPI apps. It also encourages the use of UPI Lite, a faster option for small payments that don’t require extra verification.
