Police said the incident took place when the victims were heading from Lal Ghati to Gandhi Nagar on the flyover road in-front of Manuabhan Tekri. They were heading towards a dhaba on the city outskirts from the Peergate side to have tea.
A SUV hit the jeep from behind, due to which the jeep turned upside down, injuring six.One of the injured was declared dead while five others were undergoing treatment in different hospitals. Condition of one of the injured remained critical. The accused SUV driver could not be identified. He left the vehicle on spot and fled. The SUV was later seized by the police.
The incident was reported in Koh-e-Fiza police station. The deceased came under the jeep. Police said the accused would be nabbed based on the vehicle’s registration number and a search for him was on. The deceased was identified as Ashfaq 35, a resident of Imami Gate in the old city area, while the injured were identified as Mazhar, Anees, Mohammad Wahid, Alam Noor, and Mohammad Zahoor.
The injured youth Mazhar told TOI, “We were six friends in the jeep. At midnight around 12.45 am we were heading to have tea from Pergate to Gandhi Nagar side. The jeep belonged to Mohammad Wahid and he was driving. We were moving at a slow speed around 40 kmph when an SUV hit our vehicle at a high speed from behind, probably in a hurry to overtake our vehicle. The deceased Ashfaq was an electrician and is survived by two brothers, a sister and mother.” Among the injured, he said that he is into tailoring work.
He added, “Three of us were admitted in different private hospitals while Mohammad Zahoor was admitted in Hamidia Hospital and his condition was critical. I sustained injury in my ribs, Mohammad Wahid got hit in the shoulder and one of his hands, Alam Noor suffered a fracture. Anees sustained injuries in head and hand. Mohammad Wahid is into farming, Alam Noor works in weights and measures and Mohammad Zahoor has a grocery shop,” Mazhar said.
There were different theories after the accident. Police said the accident took place in racing after one vehicle overtook the other. The victims were in an open jeep. However, it was a soft top jeep and was left on the spot after the incident. Police said it was unclear what exactly led to the accident.
The seized SUV had serious damages from side and front, which indicated that the incident took place in a bid to overtake, and the SUV was driven at a high speed.
