AHMEDABAD: When a 34-year-old man from Sarkhej took his wife to a doctor after struggling to conceive for a year, he was ready to handle whatever life threw at him. However, nothing could have prepared him for what the medical report revealed. The wife, whose age was recorded as 32 at the time of their wedding, was over 40 years old, according to the sonography report.
The reports also confirmed that natural conception would be impossible without medical intervention due to her age.
Upset by the alleged deception, the man approached Vejalpur police, which registered an FIR against eight people, including the wife, her father and her relatives, under multiple sections of the IPC pertaining to breach of trust, forgery, cheating, criminal conspiracy and intimidation.
The 34-year-old told police he was introduced to his future wife in May 2023. “Her biodata showed her birthdate to be May 18, 1991, making her 18 months younger than me. After meeting her family, our marriage was set for June 19, 2023. The girl’s family requested that the wedding be held in a village in Palanpur,” he stated in the FIR.
“Despite repeated requests, her family delayed providing proof of age and education. On the wedding day, during the marriage ceremony, they submitted copies of her school leaving certificate and passport, which the community accepted as genuine. My wife’s birthdate was noted as May 18, 1991, in the marriage register,” he told police.
‘Woman did not give original papers’
Months later, the couple’s efforts to conceive remained unsuccessful. “Without informing me or anyone else at home, my wife and my sister-in-law went to a doctor in Juhapura for a check-up. However, she did not share the report with me. “Later, in Sept 2023, we consulted a gynaecologist in Paldi. According to the doctor, the sonography report indicated that my wife showed signs of being 40 to 42 years old. He said that she would not be able to conceive naturally,” he stated in the FIR.
The man told police that he got his wife’s report from the doctor in Juhapura, and the findings matched the gynaecologist’s report. “After marriage, my wife avoided providing original documents whenever I asked for it to register the marriage officially and for banking purposes. In Sept, she returned to her parents’ house. When I inquired around, I found out that her brothers had tampered with her birth date on official documents, changing it from May 18, 1985, to May 18, 1991.” When confronted, they allegedly admitted to the fraud and apologized, a confession recorded by the complainant in a two-hour audio.
The husband also alleged that after marriage, his wife frequently visited her parents’ house, often taking valuable items given by him and his family.
