NEW DELHI: Former US president Donald Trump on Saturday stoked controversy for his seemingly ambiguous compliment directed at African American congressman Byron Donalds.
Trump had referred to Donalds as the “smart one” and added, “You have smart ones and then you have some that aren’t quite so good.”
Soon, Democrat nominee Kamala Harris‘s campaign team slammed Trump for his remarks and implied that the statements were racist and offensive towards African-American community.
Critics accused Trump of making racist and offensive remarks towards the African-American community. One user on the social media platform X wrote, “This is a blatant and obvious racist statement spoken from the mouth of the GOP candidate running for President of the US. Folks, he’s not trying to hide who he is.”
Another user expressed their disappointment, stating, “He’s one of the smart ones, others aren’t quite so good. Who could he possibly be talking about? The closer the election comes, the more blatantly racist he becomes. Byron Donalds is an embarrassment.”
On the other hand, Trump’s supporters argued that he was referring to congressmen in general, not specifically targeting any racial group. An X user defended Trump, saying, “The claim: Kamala HQ implies Trump was being racist by referring to Byron Donalds as a smart one. Kamala HQ is trying to stoke division.”
This is not the first time Trump has found himself in controversy for his racist comments. Earlier Trump had claimed that Black voters are drawn to him because of his criminal indictments and mugshot.
Democrats quickly denounced his comments as “racist”. But some Black Republicans have defended Trump, claiming that “life was better four years ago under his administration” because of certain initiatives during his presidency that were geared towards Black communities.
