NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday expressed his deep concern to Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar over the “abject theatrics” exhibited by some Members of Parliament within the Parliament complex.
As reported by the Vice President’s office, the Prime Minister, in a telephone call, conveyed his distress regarding the disrespectful behavior of certain MPs during the previous day’s proceedings in the sacred Parliament complex.

He affirmed his commitment to upholding the principles enshrined in the Constitution and said, “Mr Prime Minister, the antics of a few won’t prevent me from performing my duty and upholding the principles enshrined in our Constitution. I am committed to those values from the bottom of my heart. None of the insults will make me change my path.”

The context of the conversation arose from a political controversy that unfolded the day before when Trinamool Congress leader Kalyan Banerjee mimicked Vice President Dhankhar during an opposition protest on the Parliament stairs. The incident drew strong condemnation from the ruling BJP, with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also seen recording the performance.
In response to the disrespectful gestures and comments, Vice President Dhankhar expressed his anguish in the Rajya Sabha, highlighting that he felt personally hurt as his farmer and Jat backgrounds were targeted. He condemned the use of official social media handles to demean him and insult his background and position.
