HYDERABAD: B Deepthi, the 22-year-old software engineer working with a multinational company, whose body was found at her house in Korutla in Jagtial district of Telangana on August 29, was allegedly murdered by her younger sister and the latter’s boyfriend.
Police on Saturday arrested five people, including Deepthi’s sister B Chandana (20) and her boyfriend Omer Shaik Sultan (25). Omer, a resident of Hyderabad, was a batchmate of Chandana, who had joined an engineering course in the city in 2019.
Cops told TOI that the murder was the result of a failed attempt by Omer and Chandana to elope. Deepthi had found out about Chandana and Omer trying to elope with valuables in the house. To silence her, they had tied her up and covered her mouth and nose with an adhesive tape, which led to her death due to asphyxiation. Besides the couple, the cops also arrested Omer’s mother Alia Mahbub, his sister Sk Asia Fatima and his friend Hafeez, while they were trying to escape to Maharashtra in a car.
During interrogation, Chandana confessed to being in love with Omer for the past few years. Jagtial SP A Bhaskar said that Chandana wanted to marry Omer, but he was hesitating as he did not have a job and a steady income. Chandana, however, convinced him to elope.
“Chandana told Omer about the cash and gold at her home. They decided to elope with the valuables when the parents were not at home and settle down in Nagpur or Mumbai with his family,” he said.
Omer reached Korutla on August 28 in a car. Chandana, meanwhile, convinced Deepthi to drink liquor. After she dozed off, Omer entered the house and the two started searching for the jewellery and cash.
“But Deepthi woke up and raised an alarm. Panicked, Chandana and Omer covered her mouth and nose with a scarf and tied her hands with another scarf. As she continued screaming, they wrapped adhesive tape around her mouth and nose, resulting in her asphyxiation,” Bhaskar added.
