NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated development projects worth nearly Rs 11,600 crore in Assam.
PM Modi addressed a public meeting at the Veterinary College Playground in Khanapara, where he unveiled several state and central projects.
Some of the major projects for which foundation stones were laid include the Kamakhya Temple corridor (Rs 498 crore), the six-lane road from the new airport terminal (Rs 358 crore) in Guwahati, the upgrade of Nehru Stadium to FIFA standards (Rs 831 crore), and a new sports complex in Chandrapur (Rs 300 crore).
The second edition of Asom Mala roads was also kicked off by the PM. This phase will comprise 43 new roads and 38 concrete bridges, with a total investment of Rs 3,444 crore.
PM Modi also laid the foundation stone for an integrated new building of the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, which will be constructed at a cost of Rs 3,250 crore.
He also laid the foundation stones for the proposed Karimganj Medical College and Hospital, which will be constructed at a cost of Rs 578 crore, and the Rs 297-crore Unity Mall in Guwahati.
“In the last 10 years, our government has increased the expenditure on development in this region by 4 times. After 2014, the length of railway tracks was increased by more than 1900 km. The railway budget has been increased by almost 400% compared to the time before 2014.” said, PM Modi.
He added, “Our pilgrimages, our temples and our places of faith are not just places to visit. These are indelible signs of our civilization’s journey of thousands of years. This is a testimony to how India stood firm in the face of every crisis.”
In addition, PM Modi inaugurated the newly constructed four-lane road from Biswanath Chariali to Gohpur, developed at a cost of Rs 1,451 crore, and another four-lane road from Dolabari to Jamuguri, constructed at a cost of Rs 592 crore.
The PM landed at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Assam from Odisha on Saturday evening and stayed the night at Koinadhara State Guest House.
He met the office bearers of the BJP’s state core committee at night and discussed party affairs, a senior official said.
“In the meeting, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, state minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass, state BJP President Bhabesh Kalita and other party leaders were present,” he said.
