NEW DELHI: A clash erupted on Friday night at Jawaharlal Nehru University‘s (JNU) General Body Meeting (UGBM) between the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Left organisation. Both groups alleged responsibility for the disturbance, with each claiming that their members suffered injuries.
Anagha Pradeep, a JNU Councilor, alleged that the ABVP workers obstructed the UGBM from proceeding.According to her, the JNUSU elections are taking place, and the UGBM is the highest decision-making body for students. The meeting was called after collecting 1200 signatures, but the administration and ABVP claim that JNUSU is not a recognised body and is illegal. ABVP workers disrupted the proceedings, misbehaved, and even assaulted students who were controlling the sound system.
On the other hand, Umesh Chandra, ABVP JNU President, alleged that members of the All India Students’ Association (AISA) and Student Federation of India (SFI) threatened them to leave the meeting. Chandra stated that they were using casteist remarks against the tent house workers who operated the speaker system. ABVP intervened to maintain peace, but the UGBM did not commence until midnight. Several ABVP workers were injured, with some being attacked with a Dafli as a weapon.
As of now, the police have not yet registered a complaint related to the incident.
