LG Electronics (LG) and Facebook parent company Meta have announced a collaboration to expedite their extended reality (XR) and augmented reality (AR) ventures. As a part of this, the companies aim to combine their technologies across products, content, services and platforms, driving innovation in customer experiences within the growing virtual space.
The announcement comes as Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg met with LG Electronics CEO William Cho and other senior officials from the South Korean electronics giant in Seoul on Wednesday (February 28).
Cho expressed interest in Meta’s advanced technology, including the Meta Quest 3 headset and Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, focusing on large language models (LLM) and potential on-device AI integration.
How LG wants to use Meta’s technology
LG says it envisions leveraging Meta’s platform alongside its own content and service capabilities from the TV business to create a unique XR ecosystem. The company also believes that merging Meta’s core technologies with LG’s product and quality expertise will lead to advancements in next-generation XR devices.
XR devices are seen as the next generation of personal devices, offering superior immersion and intuitiveness compared to mobile screens. The South Korean tech giant says that it sees this market as an opportunity for next-generation personal devices and has established a dedicated XR business unit.
“We see opportunities for next-gen personal devices in the XR business arena,” Cho previously said.
Meta Quest 3 launch
Meta launched Quest 3 virtual reality headset last year as it looks to take a lead in the XR market. Meanwhile, Apple’s Vision Pro headset made its global debut last month. Zuckerberg recently reviewed the Vision Pro and said that Meta’s product was a better value proposition.
Reportedly, Zuckerberg is also scheduled to meet with representatives from at least five unidentified XR startups at Meta Korea’s office in a closed-door session.
