NEW DELHI: Former Supreme Court judge A M Khanwilkar was on Tuesday appointed as chairman of Lokpal, two years after Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose completed his term as head of the anti-corruption ombudsman.
Centre also notified the appointment of three judicial members and three non-judicial members of Lokpal. The judicial members include former Himachal Pradesh HC Chief Justice Lingappa Narayana Swamy, former Allahabad HC CJ Sanjay Yadav and Law Commission chairman Ritu Raj Awasthi.
Former chief election commissioner Sushil Chandra, Pankaj Kumar and Ajay Tirkey are the non-judicial members.
After Justice Ghose retired in May 2022, judicial member Justice Pradip Kumar Mohanty was functioning as the acting chairman of the anti-corruption ombudsman that can investigate corruption charges against public functionaries, including prime minister and cabinet ministers.
Justice Khanwilkar retired from apex court in July 2022, a few months after the Lokpal chairman’s post fell vacant. Appointments in Lokpal are made by the President on recommendation of a five-member selection committee headed by the PM and comprising the CJI, Lok Sabha speaker, leader of opposition in Lok Sabha and an eminent jurist.
With these appointments, the Lokpal still has two vacancies as it has a sanctioned strength of four judicial and four non-judicial members, besides the chairman.
