BENGALURU: In the age of growing dependence on ride-hailing services like Ola and Uber, a troubling incident involving an Uber driver has gone viral on social media.
The incident involves a software engineer employed at Google, who alleges that the Uber driver subjected him and his friend to verbal abuse before abruptly leaving them midway in their journey.
In a social media post on X, the tech guy visiting the city shared his “first bad experience in Bangalore.” He described how the Uber driver put his phone call on speaker and kept talking loudly for half an hour. When the tech guy and his friend asked him to use headphones, the driver reportedly started insulting them and demanded they leave the car.
“First bad experience in Bangalore. Booked this Uber @Uber_India, the estimated journey time was 1.5 hours. For the first 30 minutes, the driver constantly kept talking over his phone on a loudspeaker. I and my friend got some headaches after a while and asked him politely to use headphones or talk later. Guess what happened next.
We were abused and asked to get out of the car, saying “I am not comfortable to ride with you people(sic)”.
His post caught the eye of many users who had faced similar situations. Numerous users shared their instances where Uber drivers asked passengers to turn on the air conditioning and asked for extra fees upon reaching the destination.
One user recounted, “Once I boarded an Uber at 5 in the morning, and that guy was on a call with his buddy for the entire trip (sic).”
Another shared a similar incident, stating, “I had a similar experience during my internship. Me and my friend were going to a creator meetup in an auto. We mistakenly told an incorrect turn and went 400m in the wrong direction. When we told the driver that we had taken the wrong turn, he literally made us get off the auto in the middle of nowhere. The total distance of the ride was more than 10km, and we told him that we will pay extra but he just didn’t care (sic).”
Yet another user expressed frustration, saying, “Uber does nothing on these kinds of complaints. I was threatened by the driver. I complained to Uber. I asked them what actions did you take against the driver. They said it is confidential, we can’t share the details of the action. ZERO transparency(sic).
