NEW DELHI: Election Commission (EC) on Thursday allowed Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasheb Thackeray), or UBT to accept public contributions in view of the looming Maharashtra assembly polls.
Uddhav Thackery-led party had requested the poll body to issue a communication or certificate recording the status of the party for the purpose of accepting voluntary contributions from the public.
A delegation of the party led by their general secretary Subhash Desai also met the EC today at Nirvachan Sadan in New Delhi.
The ECI in its communication dated July 18, has authorized the party to ‘accept any amount of contribution voluntarily offered to it by any person or company other than a government company’ in compliance under Section 29 B and Section 29C of the Representation of People Act, 1951, which governs the contribution to all political parties, according to news agency ANI.
Vertical Shiv Sena split
In 2022, the Shiv Sena, which was the largest party in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), saw a vertical split when Eknath Shinde and 39 other MLAs revolted against chief minister Uddhav Thackeray and joined hands with BJP.
The defection of a majority of Sena MLAs led to the collapse of the MVA government, prompting Uddhav to step down as CM. Shinde then formed a Shiv Sena-BJP government with former CM Devendra Fadnavis as his deputy.
Several political leaders credited Fadnavis for engineering the split in Shiv Sena. The BJP leader himself admitted to playing a key role in the Shinde-led revolt, calling it “an act of revenge”.
Later, assembly speaker and BJP leader Rahul Narwekar, on the orders of the Supreme Court, held that the faction led by Shinde was the “real Shiv Sena” when it emerged on June 21, 2022.
He also declared the appointments of legislator Bharat Gogawale as the Shiv Sena whip and Shinde as the party leader valid.
Earlier, the poll body accepted Sharad Pawar-led NCP’s demand to accept voluntary contributions from the public.
Sharad Pawar‘s NCP-SCP, which was formed after senior Pawar’s nephew Ajit Pawar staged a vertical split in the NCP, was allowed by the poll body to accept any amount of contribution voluntarily offered to it by any person or company.
