Police have ruled the sudden death of a two-month-old baby in regional Victoria is not suspicious after making inquiries.
The mysterious circumstances surrounding the death made headlines after the baby boy was found unresponsive about 9pm on Saturday in the town of Alfreton, west of Ballarat.
Neighbours said the baby’s mother had run up the street with her child asking for help.
“(She) came running out with him and handed him to a neighbour,” the female neighbour told the Herald Sun.
“The neighbour was trying to help and was doing CPR on the baby. It was terrifying.
“Then the mum ran down the street.”
Paramedics also performed CPR but the child could not be revived and died at the scene.
“Police have received the results of a post mortem following the death of a two-month old boy in Alfredton on 20 January,” a Victoria Police spokesperson said.
“The matter is not being treated as suspicious and local police will prepare a report for the Coroner.”
The baby’s family have also been notified of the update.
A crime scene was set up at the home as police made inquiries throughout Sunday and Monday, with detectives examining the property and interviewing neighbours who witnessed the incident.
Another neighbour also told the Herald Sun that a woman connected to the boy knocked on their door just after 9pm and appearing “scared or frightened and like she wanted to get somewhere safe”.
“She looked scruffy and a little bit dirty like something had happened, and she was not wearing shoes, and didn’t have a phone or bag with her,” they said.
