Another photo released by Kensington Palace has sparked controversy, with leading photo agency Getty Images claiming it was digitally manipulated, says a report by CNN. The picture, taken by Princess Catherine (Kate) and showing Queen Elizabeth II with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, has been “digitally enhanced” according to Getty, with CNN analysis suggesting alterations in up to 19 spots.
This comes just weeks after a Mother’s Day photo of Kate and her children, supposedly taken by Prince William, was revealed to be edited. In response to the first incident, Kate apologised and said she enjoys “experimenting” with image editing.
The newly discovered edits centres on a photo released in April 2023. The picture features the Queen, who passed away in September 2023, surrounded by 10 young royals. According to CNN, unless someone zooms in and closely looks at the photo, it is hard to tell that it has been digitally enhanced. For instance, there are artefacts in the photos which are random or heads which look like they have been posted from other photos.
While there isn’t anything wrong with posting editing images, Getty doesn’t allow too much editing. In accordance with its policies, Getty notes that only minimal editing is allowed in its library to avoid spreading misinformation or fake news. ”Getty Images is undertaking a review of handout images and in accordance with its editorial policy is placing an editor’s note on images where the source has suggested they could be digitally enhanced,” a spokesperson told CNN.
Earlier this year, there was an image that created quite a stir. While Kensington Palace initially said Kate captured it at Balmoral Castle months before the Queen’s death, the edits raise questions about whether the image is actually a composite of several photos.
