NEW DELHI: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday continued with his attacks on Rahul Gandhi calling him a “darpok“(coward) and accusing the Congress leader of wanting to destablise the state. Himanta also charged the Congress with following “soft Naxalite” politics. The Assam chief minister alleged that Rahul Gandhi’s Nyay Yatra was in Assam during the Ram temple consecration ceremony as a part of political conspiracy to create communal tension in the state.
“What was this Yatra? Look at its timing. They had hatched a conspiracy to instigate a major communal clash in Assam. We had a glimpse of it in Guwahati. But their big conspiracy was to cross through Assam during the Ram Temple Pranpratishtha and a clash ensues in the state. But the people of our party and Ram Bhakts restrained themselves. They did not let anything untoward happen in Assam,” Himanta said.
Himanta Sarma and Rahul Gandhi have been engaged in a bitter war of words with both of them openly attacking each other. Himanta has asserted that Rahul will be arrested after the Lok Sabha polls for provoking crowd during the party’s showdown with cops on the outskirts of Guwahati earlier this week. The state government did not allow Rahul’s yatra to enter Guwahati leading to clashes between Congress workers and the police. Later, on the orders of Himanta Sarma, an FIR was registered against Rahul and other Congress leaders. Assm chief minister has also formed an SIT to conduct investigations.
Referring to the incident, the chief minister accused Rahul of trying to destabilise the state. “If he loves Assam, then he could have stopped at Bhupen Hazarika Samaadhi Khetra and paid his tribute to Bhupen Hazarika. If he believes in Hindu Dharma, then he could have gone to Kamakhya temple for a minute also. The main aim was to destabilise Assam,” Sarma said.
‘Rahul a darpok’
Himanta also took a dig at Rahul and said he fled the spot in a car after clashes broke out between the Congress workers and police. In a post on X, Sarma wrote, “After instigating Congress workers to orchestrate violence, Rahul Gandhi (who is on a Bus Yatra) quietly came out of his fancy bus and fled the city in a small car to Hajo, his next destination. “Rahul has set a new standard for being a Darpok,” he added.
‘Crowd only in minority areas’
Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed that Rahul Gandhi’s yatra only drew crowds in Muslim populated areas in Assam. He posted two photographs, one in Gandhi inside a bus, captioned as ‘Hindu majority area (inside the vehicle)’ while the other was captioned ‘Muslim Majority area (atop the vehicle)’. This sums up the Bharat Bus Yatra.
The Assam chief minister also claimed that Muslim women were not part of the crowd during Rahul’s yatra. “I am very happy about only one thing, mother and sisters in Muslim majority areas did not join this Yatra,” he said.
‘Most corrupt CM, remote-controlled by Modi and Shah’
Rahul Gandhi has been unsparing in his attacks on Himanta Biswa Sarma repeatedly calling him the most corrupt chief minister of the country. In his rallies during the yatra, Rahul has also accused Himanta Sarma of taking instructions from Delhi to please Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “PM Narendra Modi and Amit Shah have the remote control of Sarma, who will be thrown out instantly if he speaks anything for the benefit of Assam,” Rahul has repeated at several of his rallies in Assam.
‘Keep filing FIRs, yatra will go on’
Congress Lok Sabha member Gaurav Gogoi on Thursday said the Assam chief minister could keep registering FIRs against Rahul Gandhi but the grand old party will continue with its Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, with an aim to unite the country.
The Congress MP from Assam’s Kaliabor said that Sarma is the “most corrupt” CM and that this is expected from him.
“They (the Assam government) keep filing FIRs, we will continue on our Yatra. Bharatiya Janata Party should keep dividing the country on the basis of religion and language, (but) we will continue to unite the country through Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra,” Gogoi said.
