GUWAHATI: Incessant rain resulted in sudden deterioration of the flood situation in Assam with the number of flood-affected people touching 1.9 lakh overnight.
This is an almost four-fold rise in the number of flood-affected population since Sunday evening when about 45,000 people were facing deluge as per the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) report.
A man drowned in upper Assam’s Sivasagar district on Monday afternoon when he went for fishing, officials said.
With this, the season’s flood death toll has touched 15, said an official of ASDMA. Water from the Brahmaputra has submerged many villages in Demow circle of Sivasagar where the incident took place in Barpathar village. The villager, Obad Deuri (67), drowned around 2.30 pm.
The ASDMA report on Monday evening said 17 districts and sub-divisions of the state had been affected by floods till Monday evening. Biswanath, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Jorhat, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, Tamulpur and Udalguri have been affected due to the swolllen Brahmaputra and its tributaries. More than half of the flood-affected population are women (67,955) and children (38,163), the ASDMA bulletin said.
The highest number of people – 47,338 – are affected in Lakhimpur district, followed by 40,997 flood-hit in neighbouring Dhemaji district – both bordering Arunachal Pradesh.
According to the Central Water Commission’s (CWC) morning bulletin, the Brahmaputra was flowing above danger level in Dibrugarh, Dhubri, Tezpur and Neamatighat. Beki, Jia-Bharali, Disang, Dikhou and Subansiri, all important tributaries of Brahmaputra, have also breached the danger level, the ASDMA said. A total of 522 villages across the affected districts were reeling under floods that have affected 8,086.40 hectares of crop area.
Over 400 inmates have been shifted to relief camps in Chirang and Sonitpur districts.
Medical teams have been deployed for the marooned people in the worst-affected Dibrugarh and Chirang districts, even as the State Disaster Response Force personnel evacuated 111 people in Dibrugarh and Sonitpur districts, the ASDMA said.
Ferry services over the Brahmaputra in Guwahati have been suspended due to heavy water current. “Due to increased rainfall in Arunachal Pradesh and in Barpeta and Baksa districts, the water level is expected to rise in northern tributaries of Brahmaputra in above said districts and in main Brahmaputra in middle and lower regions,” read the CWC bulletin.
Several river embankments have been breached by surging rivers at numerous points in Sonitpur, Darrang and Udalguri districts, while the devastating flood has damaged bridge infrastructure in Biswanath and Tamulpur. In Tamulpur near Bhutan, Kalanadi Tiger bridge cracked due to heavy flooding on Monday. The IMD has warned of heavy rain at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya on Tuesday.
