NEW DELHI: The Samajwadi party chief Akilesh Yadav on Monday fired salvos at the BJP government, saying that the saffron party intends to “snatch the rights of Muslim Brothers” amid growing speculation that the ruling government could bring in an amendment to the Wafq Boards Act.
The Samajwadi party supremo also did not hold back from going after the Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath, suggesting that a Yogi cannot become a Yogi “if he doesn’t believe in the Constitution”.
“CM Yogi Adityanath came to know that Nazul is an Urdu word, and the officials kept explaining to him that Nazul means something else. But he thought that Nazul meant the land of Muslims,” he said news agency ANI.
Akilesh Yaday riding on a success from a strong consolidation of seats in the Lok Sabha elections, harped on the theme that BJP’s thinking about Muslims is “undemocratic and unconstitutional.”
“BJP has no work except Hindu-Muslim or how to snatch the rights of Muslim brothers. The rights they have got, the right to freedom or the right to follow their religion, the right to maintain their working system,” the SP leader charged.
Akhilesh Yadav said that individuals who are concerned about the welfare of Dalits, tribals, and minorities but are aligned with the BJP should consider leaving the saffron party.
“Those who are worried about reservation, backwards, Dalits, tribals and minorities should leave BJP immediately. Their aim from the very first day has been to defame the socialists and especially their thinking about Muslims is undemocratic and unconstitutional,” he said.
The central government is considering changes to the Waqf Act, which might limit the authority of the Waqf Board. Initially passed in 1954, the Waqf Act was repealed and replaced in 1995 to grant more power to the Waqf Boards. This was further expanded in 2013, giving the Waqf Board extensive powers to designate property as ‘Waqf Property.’
The proposed changes could require the Waqf Board to register its properties with the District Collector’s office for evaluation. Additionally, the amendments are intended to improve inclusivity by ensuring that women are represented on both the Central Waqf Council and state boards.
