In a wave of violence following the resignation and departure of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, country’s former cricket captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza‘s house was reportedly set on fire. The unrest erupted after Hasina left the country amidst massive student protests.
Local media reported that vandals targeted Mortaza’s residence, causing significant damage. Mortaza, who currently serves as a member of parliament for the Narail-2 constituency in Khulna division, was re-elected earlier this year as a candidate for the Awami League, led by Sheikh Hasina.
During his cricketing career, Mortaza captained Bangladesh in 117 international matches, accumulating 390 wickets and 2,955 runs across 36 Tests, 220 ODIs, and 54 T20Is.He transitioned to politics in 2018, joining the Awami League and winning a parliamentary seat.
The unrest also saw the burning of the District Awami League office and the vandalism of district Awami League president Subash Chandra Bose’s properties. In Narayanganj, the residence of Shamim Osman, the MP for Narayanganj-4, was attacked and damaged. In Comilla, a mob set fire to the house of AKM Bahauddin Bahar, the MP for the Comilla-6 (Sadar) constituency, after storming his property.
The Dhaka Tribune reported widespread chaos, with numerous Awami League properties being targeted across the country.
