NEW DELHI: A day after the prosecution informed a CBI court about the untraceable bones and remains — allegedly of Sheena Bora, Indrani Mukerjea‘s lawyer on Saturday said he would “take whatever legal advantage or legal mileage” the development provides, and called the untracebility a “big blunder” committed by the central agency.
“From the investigation point of view, I think it is a big blunder that the agency has committed. From the prosecution’s point of view, I think this puts a big hole in the prosecution’s case of the size of a lunar crater. We will take whatever legal advantage that gives us or legal mileage that this gives us… CBI is an extremely meticulous, responsible and premier independent investigating agency of the central government,” Mukherjea’s advocate Ranjeet Sangle told news agency ANI.
Sangle expressed apprehension that a “fraud was played upon the CBI”, stating that the probe agency itself “had never seen the articles”.
“They don’t commit blunders like this. My apprehension is whether this is a fraud played upon the CBI itself because the records seem that none of the officers of the CBI had ever physically or visually seen these articles,” he added.
This disclosure was made on Thursday during the deposition of a forensic expert from the state-run JJ Hospital in Byculla, Mumbai. The court is currently recording the testimony of the forensic expert who first examined the bones recovered by the Pen police in 2012 from the site where Sheena Bora’s burnt body was allegedly buried.
Indrani Mukerjea, Sheena Bora’s mother, is the prime accused in the murder case. According to police, the 24-year-old Sheena Bora was killed in April 2012, though the crime only came to light in 2015.
On Thursday, Special Public Prosecutor CJ Nandode informed the court that the bones and remains, which were referred to and examined by the forensic expert, could not be located despite a thorough search. Nandode added that the prosecution plans to continue the chief examination of the witness without displaying the articles, as they are untraceable.
The CBI court adjourned the matter to June 27 for further evidence recording after defense advocates raised no objections to the prosecution’s request.
