NEW DELHI: West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar, on Thursday, was taken into custody briefly before being granted bail after he sat on a protest demanding the arrest of Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Shahjahan Sheikh in violence-hit Sandeshkhali of North 24 Parganas district.
” Police picked us up forcefully. I was arrested, then made to sign a bail bond, and later released.We were arrested for sitting on a dharna here. We will continue to raise our voices and protest until our workers are allowed to visit Sandeshkhali,” Majumdar said.
Eight days after sustaining injuries during a protest in nearby Taki while trying to enter Sandeshkhali, Majumdar was granted permission by the police to visit the trouble-torn area in North 24 Parganas district.
Meanwhile, fresh protests rocked parts of trouble-torn Sandeshkhali against local TMC leaders accused of sexual abuse of the women folk and forcible land grabbing in the area. Armed with sticks, they set ablaze a thatched structure near a pond, venting their fury against the elusive TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh and his brother Siraj. The torched structure, it was revealed, belonged to Siraj.

NCST acting vice-chairperson Ananta Nayak said they have also received complaints against a politician, which they would include in their report to the President, the official added.
