Police say a knife-wielding woman has gone on a wild rampage through traffic with two children and a dog in the car, crashing into a light pole before being dramatically arrested in front of shocked motorists.
The 23-year-old Manunda woman was charged with a raft of offences following the incident in Cairns which started on the afternoon of Sunday, April 21.
Emergency services were called to a David Street address where police allege a woman armed herself with a knife.
“Police were called and the woman placed two children in a vehicle and drove away,” Queensland Police said in a statement last week.
“It will be further alleged the woman drove on the wrong side of the road and directly at police, before colliding with traffic lights on Ray Jones Drive near Rigg Street. She was arrested and both children and a dog were removed from the vehicle unharmed. After a short confrontation at the collision scene the woman was arrested by officers.”
Dashcam and mobile phone footage from onlookers taken on the day show a grey SUV driving erratically, dangerously overtaking a line of cars and speeding through the intersection before crashing.
Officers were seen rushing to the car to pull the young children to safety, as others pulled the woman from the driver’s seat and threw her onto the road.
“Police will allege the woman bit a police officer when she was taken to Cairns Hospital for precautionary checks following the collision,” Queensland Police said.
“The woman has been charged with one count each of going armed as to cause fear, evasion, dangerous operation of a vehicle, obstruct police, serious assault domestic violence offence, serious assault police, and driver not ensuring passengers wear seatbelts.”
She was refused bail and appeared before Cairns Magistrates Court last Tuesday, April 23.
