NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday extended its interim order, maintaining a stay on directives from Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Madhya Pradesh state governments, that required eateries along the kanwar yatra route to display the names of their owners outside their shops.
“We’ve said what was needed to be said in our July 22 order. Can’t force anyone to disclose names,” said the Supreme Court on staying directive for eateries.
The stay order will remain in effect until August 5, the date set for the next hearing.
Earlier today, the Uttar Pradesh government defended its directive requiring eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route to display the names of their owners and staff. The government argued that the directive aimed to promote transparency, prevent “potential confusion,” and ensure a peaceful Yatra. On July 22, the Supreme Court issued an interim stay on the directives from the BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand governments.
In its response to challenges against the directive, the Uttar Pradesh government stated that the intent was to provide transparency and allow kanwariyas to make informed choices about their food during the Yatra, considering their religious sentiments to prevent any inadvertent conflict with their beliefs.
