NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the investigation on Tuesday into the rape and murder of a woman doctor at a state-run medical college in Kolkata, as per officials.
The agency promptly completed all necessary formalities within hours of the Calcutta High Court‘s order instructing the state police to transfer the case documents to the central probe agency.
On Wednesday early morning, a team of CBI officials from Delhi, accompanied by forensic scientists and medical experts, will visit Kolkata. The High Court had earlier directed the state police to hand over the case diary to the CBI by 10 AM on Wednesday.
The postgraduate trainee’s body was discovered on Friday morning inside a seminar hall of the state-run RG Kar hospital, where she was allegedly raped and murdered. A civic volunteer was arrested in connection with the case on Saturday. The preliminary autopsy report indicated that the victim had been sexually abused and murdered, with injuries observed on her eyes, mouth, private parts, left leg, neck, right hand, ring finger, and lips.
The Kolkata Police had arrested a 33-year-old individual who joined the force as a civic volunteer in 2019. The police alleged that the accused was married at least four times and was known as a “womaniser”. The accused, a trained boxer, had developed close relationships with a few senior police officers over the years, leading to his transfer to the Kolkata Police Welfare Board and posting at the police outpost at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where the incident occurred.
