NEW DELHI: Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president YS Sharmila Reddy along with 40 party workers were apprehended in Vijayawada on Thursday. The protesters were marching towards the Secretariat, opposing the recent District Selection Committee (DSC) notification for teacher recruitment.
The Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) had organised a ‘Chalo Secretariat’ protest march from its headquarters at Andhra Ratna Bhavan.Sharmila had spent the previous night in the party office to avoid house arrest.

“We’ve detained about 40 individuals (Congress activists) for disrupting traffic flow and voicing slogans on Eluru Road. They’ve been removed,” stated Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) B Ravi Kiran of Vijayawada South to PTI.

Meanwhile, APCC President Y S Sharmila criticised the YSRCP government for making arrests while the Congress party stands in solidarity with the unemployed. Sharmila demanded an apology from the YSRCP to the unemployed, claiming that despite promising 23,000 jobs, only around 6,000 were notified in the DSC notification.
“Under the autocratic regime of YSRCP, arrests are made when questions are raised about the deceptive DSC. Thousands of police officers have surrounded us with barricades, creating an impression that we are prisoners,” said APCC President Y S Sharmila in a social media post.

Later, during a press conference, she highlighted that the police had been on high alert for the past two days to prevent Congress party leaders and activists from participating in ‘chalo secretariat’. “What is our fault? What is our crime? Are we thieves or outlaws? Why does the government feel the need to restrain us? If you (YSRCP government) have truly performed well, why fear our protest?” questioned Sharmila.
She demanded a comprehensive DSC notification with 30,000 teaching positions and also requested a job calendar.
