BENGALURU: A 24-year-old business administration graduate preparing himself for civil service exams and his three associates allegedly kidnapped an industrialist and extorted Rs 7 lakh from him in Rajajinagar on January 5.
The prime suspect, Sachin N, a resident of MC Layout in Vijayanagar, and one of his associates, Gauri Shankar, in his 30s and an autorickshaw driver from Kamakshipalya have been arrested. Cops are looking for two more friends of Sachin.
City police commissioner B Dayananda on Friday said the accused persons had kidnapped the industrialist after he refused to pay Rs 4 lakh to Sachin. “The prime suspect claimed that he had helped the industrialist’s daughter get a seat for first-year BBA at a private college in Shantinagar. However, the industrialist said that the prime suspect never helped him in getting the seat and refused to give the money. This triggered the kidnap,” Dayananda added.
Turn of events
Last year, industrialist Chetan S Shah from Rajajinagar IVth Block was trying to get a BBA seat for his elder daughter at the private college. Shah met Sachin through a common friend and the latter promised to get him the seat in the college and demanded Rs 4 lakh. Shah agreed to pay.
“However, Sachin never got back to Shah. Realising he had little time, Shah approached another person, Muniyappa, and succeeded in getting the seat. Later, Sachin started calling Shah, saying it was because of his efforts that his daughter got the seat and, therefore, Shah must pay him Rs 4 lakh. But Shah firmly refused saying it was Muniyappa who had helped him. Also, Shah clearly told Sachin that he will never pay him,” an investigating officer said.
Around 12.30pm on January 5, Shah was driving towards his factory in Peenya when Sachin and others blocked his path on Dr Rajkumar Road. “Sachin and four others entered my SUV. One of them drove my car and Sachin held me at knife-point. He demanded Rs 7 lakh (Rs 4 lakh for admission, Rs 2 lakh interest and Rs 1 lakh to be paid to his associates for that day’s work). I called my wife, directing her to get Rs 7 lakh that was kept in my bank locker for emergency purpose. One of Sachin’s associates went to my Rajajinagar house and received the money. Later, Sachin made a video of mine saying I have given the money on my own. Finally, around 2.30pm, they released me near Navarang Circle,” Shah’s complaint to Rajajinagar police read.
Shah lodged the police complaint on January 6 and two of the four suspects were arrested. “Neither Sachin, nor Gauri Shankar has past criminal records. Sachin and Gauri Shankar became friends in a gym in Vijayanagar,” said police.
