BAREILLY : A cleric of a two-storey mosque in UP’s Bareilly district was booked Friday under Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971 —which invites a maximum three-year jail term — for allegedly hoisting a religious flag on top of the tricolour.
As per the country’s flag code, “no other flag should be placed higher than or above or side by side with the national flag”.
ASP (Bareilly rural) Mukesh Chandra said, “An FIR was registered against Mohd Ayyub (in his 40s). Ayyub, who is also the mosque’s caretaker, is on the run and efforts are on to locate him”.
The cleric was charged following a complaint by a right-wing activist on Thursday. Complainant Udit Sharma alleged that Ayyub “insulted the tricolour and tried to disrupt peace”.
In another incident in Bareilly city on Friday, a doctor was booked for “derogatory remarks” against the minority community on a social media group. SHO Kotwali Dharmendra Kumar Yadav said, “We’ve registered an FIR against Dr Parmendra Maheshwari under IPC sections 153-A (promoting enmity), 295-A (outraging religious sentiments) along with the IT Act.”
