NEW DELHI: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge warned PM Narendra Modi that the country will witness “hungama” (protests) if BJP tries to tamper with the Constitution, as he cited governing party MP Anantkumar Hegde’s plea that “400 Lok Sabha seats are needed to change the Constitution”.
Kharge said if Modi has the courage, he should personally rebut the MP and expel him from the party.Rahul Gandhi said threat to the Constitution has turned elections into a “social justice vs exploitation” battle.
Calling BJP-RSS “manuwadi”, Kharge said the ruling camp never accepted Ambedkar’s Constitution, its embedded features of social justice, SC/ST reservation, right to equality and ‘ secularism’, and repeated statements from their leaders are evidence that they plan to junk them. “When Modi says ‘400 paar’, this is what he means. But he does not explicitly talk about changing the Constitution and directs others to say so,” Kharge told a press conference.
The Congress chief rubbished BJP’s claim of having sought an explanation from the MP, saying Hegde has made the statement multiple times in the past.
