West Bengal forest department has decided to name a creek in Sundarbans Tiger Reserve (STR) after forest guard Amalendu Halder who was killed by Bangladeshi pirates on May 18, reports Krishnendu Mukherjee. Rajendra Jakhar, STR field director, said this is their effort to remember him on International Tiger Day. Locally known as Morabani-I, the creek will be renamed ‘Amalendu Khal‘.
“We will declare it on Monday, Global Tiger Day,” said deputy field director Justine Jones.
Halder, 59, was hacked to death by 8 to 10 pirates. Three other forest workers who were with Halder jumped into the river and escaped the attack.
