THANE/MUMBAI: The police shut down the internet in Badlapur, registered four FIRs against 1,500 persons and arrested 60 people on Wednesday in response to the previous day’s violent protests over a school sexual abuse case.
The opposition MVA called a bandh on Saturday to protest against what it called was ineffective govt action in the case of sexual abuse of two four-year-old girls by a sweeper at the school.
CM Eknath Shinde called Tuesday’s daylong violent protests politically motivated. He said truckloads of people were arranged for the demonstrations to “defame” the Mahayuti govt.
The school education department of the state appointed an administrator and two advisers for the school where the sexual assault took place.
Most of the persons in the police FIRs remained unidentified. The FIRs and the arrests were for unlawful gatherings and violence at Badlapur railway station and elsewhere on Tuesday.
A 10-hour rail roko and daylong bandh in Badlapur had paralysed life on Tuesday, when the school where the abuse occurred was also vandalised and two policemen were injured in stone-pelting at Badlapur station.
Several governing party and opposition politicians visited Badlapur on Wednesday. Protesting near Mantralaya, Congress politicians expressed concern over the appointment of Ujjwal Nikam as the special public prosecutor for the case.
“The institution (school where incident occurred) management and he (Ujjwal Nikam) are from the same party (BJP). What justice can one expect? Can’t they find a bigger advocate than him?” lLoP Vijay Wadettiwar said.
A Kalyan sessions court extended the police custody of the accused sweeper till Monday. A mob vandalised the residence of the sweeper.
