Police presence has been stepped up in markets like Lajpat Nagar, Paharganj, Hauz Khas and Sarojini Nagar.
“We have boosted the presence of uniformed officers at major gatherings and cultural sites to prioritise public safety. To enhance security, we have advised establishments to ensure functionality of security cameras and alarms, conduct perimeter sweeps, and screen mail and packages,” an intelligence official said.
Anti-terror unit cops are working in close coordination with the intelligence agencies and all inputs are being verified.
The cops are more cautious because four of the previous IED-related incidents, investigated by the Special Cell, are still unsolved.
On Dec 17, 2023, a mysterious explosion was reported near Israel embassy, sending sleuths into a tizzy.
On Jan 29, 2021, too, a low-intensity blast outside Israeli embassy on APJ Abdul Kalam Road had sent shockwaves through the security apparatus as it took place during the Beating Retreat ceremony on Kartavya Path.
On Jan 14, 2022, an IED was found at the heavily crowded flower market in east Delhi’s Ghazipur, minutes before it was to go off. Sleuths of National Security Guards had diffused the bomb through a controlled explosion. On Feb 17, a similar IED was recovered from a crowded residential area in Seemapuri.
The Special Cell was also unsuccessful in averting the beheading of a man in northwest Delhi in Jan 2023. It later arrested two terrorists who were acting on the instructions of their handlers based in Pakistan and Canada.
