In yet another case of cyber fraud, a 32-year-old woman from Delhi lost Rs 23.5 lakh to a ‘fake’ investment website. According to a PTI report, the victim started by investing small amounts. After gaining initial returns, she decided to invest more money. Only this time, she got no returns and was unable to contact the accused.
On April 10, the woman filed a complaint at the Northeast cyber police station alleging she was duped of Rs 23.5 lakh.After launching the probe, the police were able to trace the accused, a 29-year-old man, identified as Mohammad Daud to Maujpur in Delhi.
How was the woman lured?
As per the PTI report, the woman came across a website on social media that promised high profits by trading in stock markets. She then contacted the number on the website where the accused influenced her to invest in the share market.
She started trading by investing Rs 1,000 in the beginning. After her first trade, she got a return of Rs 1,300, building her trust on the website and eventually investing more money.

However, this time the accused did not respond to her calls.
Police recovers Rs 8.55 lakhs of total invested money
The report states that the police have been able to recover a portion of the cheated amount — Rs 8.55 lakh — from Daud’s bank account, while the remaining money was transferred by him to different accounts.

A total of 17 SIM cards, 11 debit cards, four passbooks, 15 cheque books, two stamps and one phone has been recovered from the accused, identified as Mohammad Daud, the police stated.
“A team was formed and a detailed investigation was launched. The money trail was checked and it was found that the amount was deposited in 11 different bank accounts,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast) Joy Tirkey said.
“The team traced the accused to the Maujpur area and a raid was conducted. He was arrested from a rented premises in Maujpur in Delhi,” the officer said.
Daud used to dupe people with the help of an associate who will be arrested soon, he further added.
