NEW DELHI: India will soon open an embassy in Timor-Leste and vice-versa, Secretary (East) Jaideep Mazumdar said on Friday, adding that this will strengthen the Delhi-Dili connect.
President Droupadi Murmu, under the Act East Policy, is all set to take a six-day visit to Fiji, New Zealand, and Timor-Leste beginning August 5, the ministry of external affairs (MEA) announced.While announcing the schedule of the President in a special briefing, Mazumdar said, “We have announced the opening of our mission in the Timor-Leste. Prime Minister had announced this in September last year and we are well on the way to setting up our embassy and we will be setting it up very soon.”
“Timor Laste, in a meantime, has also announced its intention to open up their embassy in New Delhi which we have welcomed warmly. And so this will be Delhi connect which will only get stronger as these two embassies are opening,” he added.
Dili is the capital of Timor-Leste.
He also said that the Timor Leste has been accepted as the 11th member of ASEAN, after it has completed its annexation process.
According to the statement released by MEA, President Murmu will visit the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste on August 10 at the invitation of President José Ramos-Horta.
During the visit, President Murmu will hold a bilateral meeting with President Horta. Prime Minister of Timor-Leste, Kay Rala “Xanana” Gusmão, will call on President Murmu. In addition, President Murmu will interact with members of the Indian community. This will be the first ever Head of State visit from India to Timor-Leste.
India has “strong, deep and historical connect” with Fiji, New Zealand and Timor-Leste, Mazumdar said. Warm and friendly India-New Zealand ties have seen an uptick in recent years and the president’s visit will give it further impetus, the secretary said.
