NEW DELHI: Congress demanded Amit Shah, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the Bharatiya Janata Party to apologize to the nation, and the Union home minister to resign from his position for insulting BR Ambedkar andf the Constitution.
In a post on X, Congress listed out a series of events, claiming that insulting the architect of the Constitution BR Ambedkar is ingrained in the DNA of BJP and Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh (RSS).
The Congress claimed that in 1949, when the Hindu Code Bill was being formulated, the RSS burned effigies of Dr Ambedkar at Delhi’s Ram Leela Maidan. The oldest party also alleged that the ‘Organiser’ magazine insulted Dr Ambedkar by comparing him with “Lilliput”.
These remarks came after Union home minister Amit Shah addressed the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday where he accused the Congress of being anti-reservation and said it never worked for the benefit of the backward classes.
“In the November 30, 1949 issue of Organiser, it was written: ‘The worst thing about India’s new Constitution is that it has nothing Indian in it. The Constitution makers have included elements from British, American, Canadian, Swiss, and several other constitutions. The laws in the Manusmriti are still admired worldwide today for promoting obedience and conformity, but our constitutional scholars don’t understand their significance’,” the party wrote in a post on X.
“On January 11, 1950, Organizer magazine insulted Dr Ambedkar by comparing him to ‘Lilliput.’ The article said that Dr Ambedkar couldn’t be called the modern Manu, as it was like ‘depicting Lilliput as Brobdingnag. It is absurd to compare Dr Ambedkar to a scholarly and god-like Manu…’ it added.
He also recalled 1966 incident where RSS’s second chief, M.S. Golwalkar, elaborated on his views about the Constitution and said that the Constitution is a “cumbersome and discordant combination” of various articles from Western countries’ constitutions.
Congress quoted Golwalkar saying that Congress is merely a mixture of weak principles from the UN Charter, the now-defunct League of Nations Charter, and certain features of the American and British constitutions. In other words, there is no trace of Indian principles or political philosophy in our Constitution.
Congress listed 1993, 2000 and 2023 incident claiming that in these years the RSS insulted BR Ambedkar. The oldest party also claimed that before the 2024 general elections, BJP MPs and leaders began talking about changing the Constitution. They also quoted Amit Shah’s yesterday speech where he heard saying, “Nowadays, it’s become a trend – Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar… If only people took God’s name this much, they would go to heaven.”
“The BJP-RSS’s DNA is infused with hatred and contempt for Babasaheb and the Constitution he gave us.
They do not want Dalits and the oppressed in the country to receive respect, equality, and rights. This is why they have consistently insulted Babasaheb,” the party said.
