Three passengers have been seriously injured, and one killed, after a car crashed into a tree near Echuca, before it burst into flames.

Police believe a vehicle travelling along the Murray Valley Highway near Echuca has left the road and struck a tree near Mt Terrick Road just after 12.30pm on Sunday.

There were three people inside the car which burst into flames soon after the crash.

One passenger died at the scene.

A child has been flown to hospital in a critical condition.

The driver has been flown to hospital with serious injuries.

The exact circumstances surrounding the crash are yet to be determined at this stage and Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives will investigate.
