NEW DELHI/KOLKATA: Election Commission of India on Wednesday advised West Bengal governor C V Ananda Bose not to go ahead with his proposed tour of Cooch Behar on Thursday and Friday in view of the silence period having come into force there on Wednesday and polling scheduled for Friday.
Sources said EC, in a communication to the governor’s office upon learning of Bose’s plans to travel to Cooch Behar, said no local event could be organised for the governor, as proposed in his programme, in view of the MCC, restrictions in force due to the 48-hour silence period and April 19 being election day.
EC noted that the entire district administration and police force would be fully occupied in election management on April 18-19. The need to provide any official protocol or security cover to the governor during his “unexpected proposed visit” without any imminently known requirement would be a diversion for the district authorities and the law and order machinery, it said.
