Vinay Tyagi, police said, succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment at a private hospital. He was found lying on a road near Khaitan Public School in Sahibabad – with two deep wounds in the chest – barely 2km from his house.
Police suspect Tyagi may have been attacked during a robbery bid, pointing out that his laptop, wallet and other valuables were missing.
According to ACP (Shalimar Garden) Siddharth Gautam, Tyagi’s family members rushed him to the nearby Narender Mohan Hospital. It was not immediately clear who informed them.
“We received a call from the hospital, informing us about the death of a man from stab wounds. A team reached the hospital from Shalimar Garden police station,” the ACP added.
Preliminary investigation revealed Tyagi had left his Rajinder Nagar home for office around 11am on Friday.
“On his way back, he spoke to his family members at 11.17pm, informing them he would reach home soon. He would usually take the metro home,” Gautam said. “When he did not reach home in a while, his family members tried reaching him, but his phone went unanswered. Looking for him, they found him lying injured on the road behind Khaitan school. He was bleeding from two stab injuries,” he added.
Tyagi would normally take the metro from Rajendra Nagar station on the Red line. His office was in Aerocity, which he reached through the Airport Express line. Police officers said they were scanning CCTV footage for clues. CCTV footage shows him entering a lane as he walked back home. But there are no visuals of the crime spot. Police said 10 teams were formed to nab the suspects.
“Prima facie, it appears he was walking back home when a group of snatchers or robbers intercepted him. He might have been attacked when he tried to resist them. His wallet and laptop bag are missing, his family told us,” an officer said.
Following a complaint by Tyagi’s family, an FIR was registered under sections 302 (murder) and 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery) of the IPC.
