NEW DELHI: Five people were killed in fresh violence in Manipur‘s Jiribam district on Saturday morning, police said.
One person was shot dead while asleep and four armed individuals were killed in an ensuing exchange of gunfire.
A police officer reported that militants entered the house of a solitary resident who lived in an isolated location about 5 km from the district headquarters and shot him dead in his sleep.
After this initial killing, a heavy exchange of fire broke out between armed men from warring communities.
This confrontation took place in the hills around 7 km from the district headquarters and resulted in the deaths of four armed persons, including three hills-based militants.
“One person was shot dead in his sleep while four armed persons were killed in subsequent exchange of fire,” the officer stated.
