NEW DELHI: From linking its promise of bringing a Uniform Civil Code to the idea of “gender equality” to promising to empower women’s self-help groups (SHGs) with the skills and tools required in key service sectors to increase their income, the BJP manifesto placed women’s empowerment as a key plank of its political and development agenda.
The manifesto said “there cannot be gender equality till such time that Bharat adopts a UCC, which protects the rights of all women”.It goes on to reiterate its stand on UCC, “drawing upon the best traditions and harmonising them with modern times”. Earlier this year, Uttarakhand became the first state to have a UCC.
Highlighted passage of the women’s quota bill, the manifesto said, “We enacted the long-awaited Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam. We will systematically implement this to ensure representation for women in Parliament and state legislatures.”
Addressing concerns of marginalised sections, BJP vowed that all eligible transgender individuals will be covered under Ayushman Bharat Yojana and the network of Garima Grahas to cater to the needs of transgender individuals will be expanded.
Reiterating its commitment to empower 3 crore rural women from self-help groups to become ‘Lakhpati Didis’ who earn a minimum income of Rs 1 lakh per annum, BJP promised to integrate women SHGs in the service sector. “We will empower women SHGs with the skills and tools in key service sectors like IT, healthcare, education, retail and tourism with an aim to increase their income,” the manifesto said.
