NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday sought response from both Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh government on a PIL over alleged distribution of cash and other freebies ahead of polls in the states scheduled later this year.
The SC-bench, comprising CJI DY Chandrachud and justices JB Pardiwala & Manoj Misra, also issued notice to the Centre, Election Commission (EC) and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on the PIL alleging taxpayers’ money have been used to bribe voters ahead of assembly polls.
The top court asked the Centre, states and the poll panel to file their responses in four weeks.
“There cannot be anything more atrocious than the government distributing cash before the polls. This is happening every time and the burden is on the taxpayers ultimately,” the lawyer representing the petitioner said.
