KULLU: The upper reaches of Himachal Pradesh received snowfall, while mid and lower hills recorded light rainfall on Monday, blocking roads and triggering power outages in many areas of the state.
According to the meteorological centre, Shimla, it snowed in the higher reaches of Kullu, Kinnaur and Chamba districts and in Lahaul Spiti. The meteorological centre said it had snowed 5 to 50 cm in Kalpa and Pooh in Kinnaur, Manali, Keylong, Udaipur and Kukumseri in Lahaul Spiti by Monday evening.The high mountain passes, including Rohtang, also received heavy snowfall.
Popular tourist spot, Atal Tunnel, also received around four feet of heavy snowfall, prompting Kullu police to stop all vehicular movement beyond Solang valley.
A number of major roads in Lahaul Spiti, including Atal Tunnel to Darcha and Sarchu, Sarcha to Shinkula and Gramphu to Lossar, were blocked due to heavy snowfall. The road from Tandi to Udaipur in Lahaul Spiti was also closed.
Most parts of the state also received light to heavy rainfall on Monday. According to the weather department, it had rained 25 mm in Manali, 11 mm in Dalhousie, 10.5 mm in Chamba, 2 mm in Bhuntar, 1.5 mm in Kullu, and 2.7 mm in Kinnaur by 5.30 pm. The state recorded a total rainfall of 7.3 mm, which was 78% higher than the normal rainfall of 4.1 mm.
The snow and rain brought down the average maximum and minimum temperatures throughout the state. Kukumseri in Lahaul Spiti was the coldest place in the state with a minimum of -0.5 degrees Celsius, while Bilaspur, with a maximum of 25.7 degrees, was the warmest. Meanwhile, the rain and snowfall are likely to continue in the state in the coming days.
