Footage has captured a Gold Coast man allegedly driving at speed down a busy highway with a baby sitting on his lap and gripping the wheel.
The man was travelling in a small, silver Suzuki 4WD on a stretch of the Gold Coast Highway between Tugun and the Gold Coast Airport at Coolangatta at about 7pm on Wednesday.
Sitting in the driver’s lap was what appeared to be a tiny baby who was gripping the steering wheel with both hands.
The infant appeared to be alert as it peered curiously at other drivers and turned to look at the man who was holding it.
At one point in the video, the driver appeared to adjust the baby’s head so it was facing the road.
Queensland Police have been notified of the incident.
The punishment for having a child under the age of 18 unrestrained in a car is four demerit points and a fine of $1100. In certain incidents, other charges such as dangerous driving may apply.
