HALDWANI: Authorities have detained five individuals and named 19 others in three FIRs registered in connection with the violence that occurred in Haldwani’s Banbhoolpura area on February 8.
The violence broke out following an anti-encroachment drive, resulting in the death of five individuals. A curfew was subsequently imposed in the area.
The FIRs were filed on Friday, with the police emphasizing that the situation is now under control and no further violence has been reported.
State additional director general of police (ADG) Law & Order AP Anshuman said,:”The situation in Haldwani is normal, curfew has been lifted. Curfew continues in Banbhoolpura. Three FIRs have been registered and five people have been arrested…CCTV footage is being checked…Five people died and three people are seriously injured. Several police officials are injured…”
The police have taken numerous individuals into custody and are conducting searches to identify the culprits. Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Nainital PN Meena confirmed that three cases have been registered, naming 19 individuals and including 5,000 unidentified persons.
In response to the violence, security personnel have been deployed in the affected area. Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami visited Haldwani and strongly condemned the attack on police personnel, including women officers. He expressed concern for the injured police, administration, municipal corporation personnel, and journalists and assured that all those responsible for breaking the law and causing damage will be identified and legally prosecuted.
The chief minister has instructed ADG Law & Order AP Anshuman to remain in the affected area to ensure peace and order in Banbhoolpura. He has also issued strict directives to take decisive action against those involved in attacking the police and administration officials during the anti-encroachment drive.
The local community has been urged to maintain peace, with a stern warning that any disruption of law and order will not be tolerated. The chief secretary of Uttarakhand, Radha Raturi, has visited the violence-affected areas and directed the district magistrate and senior superintendent of police to maintain constant vigilance and prioritize the safety and peace of the public.
In response to the situation, the state government has issued a high alert across the state. Internet services have been suspended, and all schools and colleges have been ordered to close by the district administration.
“More than 100 policemen were injured (in the incident,” state ADG Law & Order AP Anshuman said on Friday.
“According to official information till now, two people have died,” Nainital DM Vandana Singh said on Friday.
