A cop and a two-year-old child are among three seriously injured in a crash which has led to major traffic headaches along a major Queensland highway.

Queensland Police’s Forensic Crash Unit is investigating after the three-vehicle smash on the Pacific Mwy at Helensvale, on the Gold Coast, about 1.20pm on Friday.

A Queensland Police spokesman said initial investigations indicated a police vehicle was stopped on the side of the motorway while performing traffic duties.

It was then struck from behind by a Mitsubishi Triton ute.

The male police officer, 54, the 54-year-old driver of the ute and her two-year-old passenger were all taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the third vehicle, who had stopped to offer assistance, was not injured.

Pictures captured by 9 News reveal the extent of the smashed police car as it remains stationary next to the second vehicle.

Emergency services can also be seen swarming the area.

An update from Queensland Traffic’s website warns two lanes on the motorway near Exit 62 remain blocked and warn of delays.
