PATNA: A 16-year-old schoolgirl, who had an affair with a local boy, was allegedly killed for “honour” by her father who also buried her body vertically at Onda village under the Sare police station area in Nalanda district. Police exhumed the body of the girl from a deep pit along the bank of a river, some 3km from the victim’s village, on Sunday.
“Villagers told police that the girl was murdered by her father. However, we are probing the case from all angles,” incharge of Sare police station, Abhishek Pratap Singh, told TOI. He added the girl’s father, Saho Chaudhary, is absconding.
The girl, Babli Kumari, a Class X student, had gone missing on Friday after returning from her school. As the villagers brought the matter to the notice of the police, a search began for the girl. Acting on a tip-off, police exhumed her body from a deep pit. What surprised all was that the body had been buried vertically, apparently to mislead the police.
“As the girl’s body was buried vertically, we had to struggle for hours to exhume it. An earthmoving machine was used for the purpose,” Singh said, adding the villagers told police that the girl had an affair with a local boy and her family was against it.
Incidents of honour killings are quite common in the state. In October this year, a minor girl was strangulated to death by her brother in Madhubani district for having an affair with a local boy. The 15-year-old girl had gone to a local temple to offer prayers when her brother killed her.
