NEW DELHI: US ambassador Eric Garcetti on Wednesday travelled to Arunachal Pradesh to inaugurate ‘The Hump WWII Museum’ in Arunachal Pradesh, the second museum in Asia, dedicated to the fallen airmen of the Allied forces during World War II.
While Beijing opposes visits by foreign diplomats to the northeastern state, which it claims to be its own, the US has described such visits by Garcetti’s predecessors in the past as a sign of support for Indian sovereignty and commitment to local partnerships.
“Hello Arunachal Pradesh! Excited for my first trip here, and am captivated by the warmth of the people. The landscapes in Pasighat are stunning! #USIndiaTogether,” said Garcetti on X.
After the inauguration, Garcetti said, “We come here today not just to mark history but to make history. To see the ways with which each one of us is called not just to witness the past but to do something to change the future.”
Reminding that the US will always remain grateful to the people of Arunachal Pradesh for saving lives and helping US pilots and soldiers during WWII while flying over the Hump, Garcetti said that such “human values” bind the two countries together in friendship.
“Today how can we not but step up to be a great friend to India, to recognise her borders, all of them, and to respect them and to call on the world to do the same,” he added.
The US also supports events related to cultural preservation in Arunachal Pradesh that China claims, saying it’s a part of southern Tibet.
